At BCS, our Mission Statement is “Training, Equipping, and Educating students to impact the world for Jesus.” Therefore, our Dress Code policy needs to be something that coincides with that mission. We believe students should, over the course of their time at BCS, be allowed more freedom to dress how they wish. Our heart is that students would be encouraged by parents, teachers, and peers to dress in a way that is pleasing to the Lord: Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

We understand that the way students dress is an expression of who they are, but at the same time should conform to a standard more modest than the secular world: Rom 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

This serves the dual purpose of glorifying the Lord while not distracting the student or their peers from our primary mission of education. We also understand that even the term “modesty” is open to interpretation, so we would ask parents to partner with the school in helping our students make these choices. We will update and clarify this policy when necessary.

We believe uniforms are the best way for this age group to dress for school. It eases the decision of what to wear to school in the mornings for both the students and the parents while they still need help. Monday through Thursday, PreK - 6th grade students must wear the standard BCS uniform. On Fridays, students are allowed to wear their Spirit Shirt and jeans. Tennis shoes are required every day for the purpose of PE and recess.

Examples of Standard BCS Uniforms

As the students develop in age and maturity, we begin to allow a degree of freedom in how they dress. The first four days of the week will still require uniforms with the fingertip length policy for skirts along with closed toed shoes for safety. Outerwear is limited to BCS branded items as well as solid neutral or school color hoodies (small appropriate brand logos acceptable). On Fridays, however; the students have the freedom to wear non uniform clothing like the Rhetoric School which will be outlined below. We ask parents to be alert to what students are wearing and help the students to make choices on Fridays that glorify and do not distract. We need our LS teachers educating and not having to police inappropriateness. For award days, please refer to the RS Professional Day policy.

Once again, within the parameters of modesty & distraction, we believe that how a student dresses does not define their faith. In Matthew, Jesus quotes the Old Testament prophet Hosea to make the point that God is concerned with what is in our hearts over anything external: Hos 6:6 For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

In Rhetoric School, we will allow the students some latitude in what they choose to wear to school. We feel this is important as part of training them to impact the world while still under the guidance of parents, as well as teachers and staff at school. The style of clothing in stores has and will always change, but what we wish to impart to the students is how to make choices that glorify the Lord. 1 Peter 2:16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Examples below are listed but the Teachers & Lead Team will retain the discretion to coach students around modesty and prevent classroom distraction.

The students should also take responsibility within themselves to help each other: Prov 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another. This will aid in the ability to keep the dress code broad and not have to be written to micromanage a few who violate the spirit of the policy.

One addition to the policy, however; will be the institution of Professional Days once a week on Tuesday. Our students in Rhetoric School need practice and instruction on how to dress in the world beyond their education as they look toward their future careers. These days will center around the idea of Business Casual dress.

  • Specifically:
    • No shorts or blue jeans (nice, colored denim is acceptable) plus a collared shirt for Gentlemen tucked in with a belt if loops are present.
    • In addition to those options, Ladies may also wear modest dresses or skirts.
    • We hope this will foster the understanding of how to present themselves in a secular work environment.
    • Any award ceremony will also fall under this format.

We ask that our culture of modesty should be addressed primarily by parents first to free our teachers up to educate.

Rhetoric School Clarifications:

  • Any shirt, tee or otherwise, that is tasteful in logo or message while also modest & covering the midriff is allowed...i.e. no tank tops or plunging necklines, and no bras or undergarments showing
  • Jeans of any color without any holes or rips are allowed
  • Skirts & shorts (girls and boys) must be fingertip length
  • No overly tight pants of any kind, but specifically no athletic leggings are allowed
  • No basketball shorts, sweatpant material, other athletic style shorts or pajama pants allowed
  • Use discretion with athletic wear versus school clothing
    • We understand current style has blurred this line, but if it’s worn to practice, it should not be worn to school
  • We will no longer require the tucking in of shirts nor will we address facial hair as long as it is kept neat and does not become a distraction. The same standard will apply to hair length
    • Additionally, hair color needs to stay within the natural colors of brown, black, blonde, and red
  • Piercings are reserved for girls only and are limited to the ears.
  • No visible tattoos
